After a dream rookie season with the New England Patriots, Drake Maye is preparing to continue his hot streak and is expected to shine even brighter in his second year.
Considering that last season he only started in 12 games and still completed 66.6% of his passes for 2,276 yards and 15 touchdowns, plus 421 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns, it’s no surprise that he’s being compared to anMVP, but he has his own opinion on the matter.

Maye doesn’t want comparisons
During his appearance on Bussin’ With the Boys, the 22-year-old quarterback discussed the comparisons he has been receiving with Buffalo Bills QB, Josh Allen.
In the conversation, Drake chose to be modest-a wise move, given that they are in the same division-and quickly dismissed them: “I think the comparisons… [Well,] I’ve got a lot of work to do. Even to be in the same stratosphere or atmosphere as Josh,” he began.
The truth is that, although Maye may be far from MVP status, his skills and athleticism are certainly comparable. On the other hand, he will face Allen and the Bills twice this season, so this stance and prudence demonstrate his wisdom. In addition, he knows that with nearly 4,300 total yards, 40 touchdowns, and six interceptions in 2024, Josh made it clear that he deserved his Most Valuable Player award.
In the interview, Drake went on to say that while he is honored by this comparison to Allen, he wants to create his own path in the NFL:
I’m just trying to be myself. And if, hey, some people think that, I mean, that’s a lot of respect for him, but I got a lot of work to do for that.
Maye’s strong point
However, when asked about the winner in a basketball match between Allen and himself, he did not give up his place.
“I’ll take myself in hoops, for sure,” Maye stated.
The truth is that, before joining New England, Drake shone on the court as a high school basketball player. His numbers weren’t bad at all: he averaged almost 14 points per game in his sophomore year and 16 in his junior year. However, he didn’t play in his senior year as he decided to enroll early at UNC.
And the most amazing thing is that, during the interview, they revealed how Maye prepared the day before the Draft:
“The day before he gets drafted, first round pick by the New England Patriots, he’s at an indoor gym in a YMCA playing pickup basketball with a bunch of gen pop. Just trying to get some work in,” Lewan said.
And although this story might not have had a happy ending, as he could have been injured and run the risk of no team picking him, fortunately everything turned out wonderfully for the North Carolina quarterback drafted with the third overall pick, who is fighting to make his own way in the league.
